About Nashville Furniture

Nashville Furniture Company has been in the family for three generation and has been operating continuously for 6O plus years. Back in 1945, at the end of WW2, returning service men and women needed just about everything as the economy grew, housing boomed, and life returned to normal again.

Household goods of all descriptions from washing machines, to furniture, to pianos and lawn mowers were in huge demand. The problem was that it was hard to get new products because the factories had not yet switched over from the war effort.

That’s when Allen and Edna Hyde decided they would go into business selling all sorts of things to this new consumer. They rented some space in Downtown Nashville, North Carolina and began stocking any products they could find. Most were used. They sold by day and loaded up a borrowed truck in the evenings and delivered their wares.

The business grew and by 1951 it was time for Edna and Allen Hyde to open a brand new store. It was a huge event in Nashville as crowds gathered to see the newest furnishings at Nashville Furniture Company. The current store still stands in this very location.

In 1971 Larry Hyde, their son, graduated from UNC Chapel Hill and went to work for his parents in the store. As the business continued to grow, the store was expanded three times to occupy the adjacent property on Washington Street.

In 1996 the third generation, Al Hyde, also a UNC Chapel Hill graduate, joined the business. Al and Larry are in the store every day just as Allen and Edna were all those years ago.
